Long before Al Davis was Al Davis, Connie Mack was Connie Mack. Though he didn’t have the sweet leather jump suits like Al, Mack remains the best-dressed manager in Major League history. For 50 years he controlled the Athletics and for 50 years he wore a suit in the dugout.
Now that the A’s are back in Philly, let’s take a trip with Mr. Mack down memory lane to where it all started.

The Cal baseball team probably lost on purpose today just so it could feel comfortable. The Golden Beers always do well when they’re close to elimination.
On Sunday, Virginia’s pitching staff was too much for Cal, which lost 4-1 and was sent to the loser’s bracket of the College World Series in Omaha.
But the greater world was introduced to Danny Fry today, as ESPN cut to the Cal student radio play-by-play man for parts of the game. Truth be told, he was more entertaining and informed than ESPN’s commentators.
The Cal baseball team (which had seven draftees) is hoping to add to its epic season tomorrow when it takes on Virginia in the first round of the College World Series.
They went from nearly extinct to bad rap song to Danny Fry to official reinstatement and now they’re off to Omaha. Here’s a few interviews with players before they left, including one with A’s 33rd round draft pick Austin Booker:
